    Powder-Coat vs Anodized: Choosing the Right Finish for Your Climate

    When you specify an aluminum railing system, you have to choose between two finish technologies: powder-coat or anodizing. Both produce beautiful, durable results. They have different strengths. Here's how we help clients decide.

    What each one actually is

    Anodizing is an electrochemical process that grows a controlled oxide layer on the aluminum surface. The color comes from dyes absorbed into the porous oxide layer. The finish IS the aluminum — it can't peel or chip because it's bonded at the molecular level.

    Powder-coating is essentially applying a colored plastic powder electrostatically to the aluminum, then heating it to fuse into a continuous protective film. The finish SITS ON the aluminum and is mechanically bonded.

    Color options

    Anodizing: typically clear (silver), bronze, dark bronze, and black. Specialty anodizers can do colors like champagne, gold, and copper, but the palette is limited. The advantage: anodized colors don't fade and have a metallic depth that powder-coat can't match.

    Powder-coat: any color, including custom RAL mixes. White, navy blue, forest green, terra cotta — anything. The disadvantage: deep saturated colors can fade slightly after 10–15 years of UV exposure.

    Durability — match the finish to the climate

    • Coastal / salt-air (Halifax, Vancouver, Atlantic provinces): anodized is far superior — salt attacks powder-coat edges over time
    • Inland with extreme freeze-thaw (Quebec, Ontario, Prairies): both work; we lean slightly toward anodized for longevity
    • Sheltered installations (interior, covered terraces): either is fine — powder-coat opens up the color palette
    • Pool / chlorine exposure: anodized only; powder-coat degrades in chlorinated environments
    • High UV (rooftop terraces, south-facing exposures): anodized doesn't fade; powder-coat can shift slightly after 10+ years

    Cost

    Powder-coat is typically 10–20% less expensive than anodizing on a small project. On large projects (1,000+ linear feet), the costs converge because anodizing tank capacity becomes the limiting factor on big batches.

    Our default recommendation

    If color flexibility matters (you want to match a specific architectural palette), go powder-coat in any RAL. If maximum durability matters (oceanfront, pool, signature long-term building), go clear or bronze anodized. If you're undecided, we'll quote both and let you decide based on the cost delta.
