    New Brunswick is the province people forget when they think about Atlantic Canada railing specification. Halifax gets the coastal attention and St. John's gets the wind headlines, but New Brunswick quietly combines several of the hardest conditions in the country: Bay of Fundy salt exposure in Saint John, aggressive freeze-thaw cycling across the interior, real snow loads in the north, and a construction market that has been building steadily enough to develop genuine opinions about what works.

    One province, three different specification problems

    Treating New Brunswick as a single climate is the first mistake. The province splits into distinct exposure regimes and a guard spec that ignores the difference either over-builds or under-performs.

    • Saint John and the Fundy coast: sustained marine exposure with heavy fog. Salt deposition is high and washing rain is frequent, which helps, but fog keeps surfaces wet for long periods and that is what drives crevice corrosion. Specify as a coastal site.
    • Moncton and the southeast: moderate coastal influence from the Northumberland Strait, but the dominant driver is freeze-thaw. Moncton sits close enough to zero for long stretches of winter that the number of freeze-thaw cycles per season is among the highest in Canada.
    • Fredericton and the Saint John River valley: continental behaviour. Colder, drier winters, less salt, more snow accumulation on balconies and more thermal movement range across the year.
    • Northern New Brunswick — Bathurst, Campbellton, Edmundston: real snow loads and design temperatures that push toward Prairie-style thermal detailing.

    Freeze-thaw is the New Brunswick failure mechanism

    In a Montreal or Quebec City winter, temperatures go below zero and stay there for extended stretches. In Moncton, the temperature crosses zero constantly — a warm Atlantic system pushes it to plus four, a cold front drops it to minus eight, and this repeats through the season. Every one of those cycles is a chance for water that has migrated into a joint, a base shoe, or a fastener hole to expand and work the assembly loose.

    Three practical consequences follow. First, any detail that can trap water will eventually be a maintenance item, so drainage matters more here than in colder-but-drier climates. Second, sealant joints see more movement cycles per year, which shortens their service life and argues for mechanically drained details over sealant-dependent ones. Third, glass setting systems that rely on wedge compression need to be specified with the understanding that they will be cycled hard.

    Continuous cold is easier on a railing than a winter that crosses zero dozens of times. Design for the cycles, not the minimum temperature.

    Code and approvals in New Brunswick

    New Brunswick adopts the National Building Code, so the guard fundamentals are the familiar ones: minimum guard height of 1,070 mm for most balcony conditions where the drop exceeds roughly 1.8 m, a 100 mm sphere limit on openings, a non-climbable zone covering roughly the 140 mm to 900 mm band above the walking surface, and laminated safety glass where glass forms part of a guard with a meaningful drop below. Design wind pressures come from the site-specific climatic data in the code's appendix, and coastal New Brunswick values are materially higher than interior ones.

    Permit administration is municipal, and the depth of review varies. Moncton, Dieppe, Riverview and Saint John have established processes; smaller municipalities may lean more heavily on the engineer of record. In every case, stamped shop drawings from a professional engineer licensed to practise in New Brunswick are the expectation for a commercial guard. That licensing point trips up out-of-province suppliers regularly — an engineer's seal from another province does not automatically satisfy a New Brunswick authority.

    Material and finish choices that hold up here

    For most New Brunswick commercial work, aluminum is the sensible base material — it does not rust, it takes a durable architectural finish, and its thermal movement is predictable. The real decisions are alloy, finish and hardware.

    • Alloy: standard architectural extrusion alloys perform well inland. On the Fundy coast, the same marine-grade thinking that applies in Nova Scotia applies here — the alloy family matters less than eliminating galvanic couples and ensuring the finish is intact.
    • Finish: both powder coat and anodizing are viable. Powder coat gives colour flexibility and a thicker barrier; anodizing gives an integral finish that resists chipping. In a freeze-thaw and de-icing-salt environment, the deciding factor is usually whether the guard is exposed to salt splash at grade — ground-level guards near a salted walkway are the harshest condition in the whole province.
    • Fasteners: stainless throughout, with isolation washers or coatings where stainless meets aluminum. Zinc-plated hardware will not survive.
    • Glass: laminated is required for guard applications with a drop, and a laminated makeup with a structural interlayer is worth specifying regardless of whether the minimum permits otherwise. The cost delta is small relative to the consequence of a broken lite in a coastal wind event.

    Supply logistics from Central Canada

    Moncton is roughly a one-day truck run from Montreal and a comfortable two-day round trip. That is one of the reasons the Maritimes are practical to serve from a Quebec fabrication base: material can be on site the day after it leaves the shop, remakes are fast, and installation crews can be deployed and rotated without air travel. The same is true for Fredericton and Saint John; the drive to northern New Brunswick adds a few hours.

    The comparison worth making is against imported systems. An overseas glass railing package that arrives with the wrong bracket or a damaged run leaves the general contractor with a multi-month hole in the schedule. A domestically fabricated package with a problem gets re-run and trucked back in days. On a project where the railing is on the critical path — which it usually is, because balcony guards gate occupancy — that difference is worth far more than the unit price gap.
