    Halifax's coastal environment and high winds put commercial railings through conditions most of the country doesn't see. Here's what to spec for a project on the harbour.

    Halifax High-Rise Railings: Coastal Corrosion, Wind Loads & Marine-Grade Specs

    We've been delivering commercial railings in Halifax for years — from the SoQu tower on the waterfront to mid-rise developments in the surrounding neighbourhoods. Halifax is a different animal than Ottawa or Montreal. Salt air, freeze-thaw cycles, and hurricane-force winds during storm season all mean spec choices that work inland fail early on the coast. Here's what to know.

    Coastal corrosion — why marine-grade actually matters

    Standard aluminum alloy for extruded architectural sections is 6063-T5. It's fine inland. Within about 1 km of tidal salt water, however, chloride-induced pitting starts to affect fasteners, welds, and untreated aluminum edges within 3–5 years.

    • Use 6061-T6 or 6063 with an anodized or marine-grade powder-coat finish — never mill-finish exposed aluminum on the coast.
    • Fasteners: 316 stainless steel (not 304, not zinc-plated) for anything permanent. The extra cost is a small fraction of the maintenance savings.
    • Anchor systems: hot-dipped galvanized or 316 stainless — never plain carbon steel embeds on coastal exposure.
    • Powder-coat: specify AAMA 2605 rating for coastal exposure, not the standard AAMA 2603 you see on inland projects.

    Halifax wind loads

    The 2020 NBC 1-in-50-year hourly wind pressure for Halifax is 0.53 kPa — significantly higher than most inland Canadian cities. For high-rise cladding-and-components, the design pressure at balcony height easily exceeds 2.0 kPa.

    • Glass panel deflection under design wind load must be checked — SGP-laminated glass is the standard choice for Halifax coastal projects to keep deflection within acceptable limits.
    • Post spacing for aluminum picket systems is often reduced from 5′ to 4′ o.c. to meet wind loads on tall exposed elevations.
    • Anchor design must account for both tension (uplift) and shear from combined wind and live load — don't undersize.

    The two things that fail early on Halifax commercial railings are the wrong fasteners and the wrong finish. Everything else is secondary.

    • All fasteners 316 SS by default, no exceptions.
    • Powder-coat AAMA 2605 minimum, with independent salt-spray test certification on request.
    • Aluminum welded joints treated with corrosion inhibitor before finishing.
    • Anchor selection reviewed by our engineering team for coastal-specific corrosion allowances.
    • Post-installation walk-through and 12-month follow-up inspection included in warranty.
