    A guard stops a fall. A handrail supports a hand. They have different heights, different loads and different code rules — and confusing them causes rejected submittals and change orders.

    What Is the Difference Between a Guard and a Handrail?

    A guard is a protective barrier that keeps people from falling off an elevated walking surface — a balcony, a mezzanine, a landing, the open side of a stair. A handrail is a graspable rail that gives a person hand support while moving along a stair or ramp. They are separate components, governed by separate code requirements, designed for different loads, and they fail in different ways. A single assembly can perform both functions, but only when it is deliberately designed to satisfy both sets of rules at once — and that is where most of the confusion on drawings and in bids comes from.

    What a guard has to do

    A guard exists to stop a body from going over an edge. Under the National Building Code, guards are generally required wherever the drop from a walking surface to the adjacent level exceeds about 600 mm, with the exact trigger and a few exemptions depending on occupancy and location. The requirements that follow are geometric and structural rather than ergonomic.

    • Height: 1,070 mm minimum for most exterior balconies and for guards around floors and landings. Within dwelling units, 900 mm is generally permitted where the drop is not more than 1,800 mm. Provincial codes vary, so confirm the version in force where you are building.
    • Openings: no opening may permit the passage of a 100 mm sphere. This governs picket spacing, the gap under the bottom rail, and the gap between a glass panel and the slab.
    • Climbability: within the non-climbable zone — under the National Building Code, roughly 140 mm to 900 mm above the level the guard protects, and directed principally at guards over significant drops — the guard must not have members, attachments or openings that facilitate climbing. Horizontal mid-rails and wide ledges are the usual casualties. Provincial editions word the zone and its scope differently, so confirm the code in force.
    • Structure: guards are designed for a horizontal distributed load along the top — generally in the range of 0.5 to 0.75 kN per linear metre depending on occupancy — plus a concentrated load applied at any point in any direction, plus wind load on exterior installations.

    On a high-rise, wind is frequently the governing case rather than the human load, which is why exterior guards above about the tenth floor look heavier than their podium-level equivalents.     What a handrail has to do

    A handrail is an ergonomic device. Its job is to be reachable, continuously grippable and dimensioned so an average adult hand can close around it and arrest a stumble. The code requirements are correspondingly about shape and continuity rather than about openings.

    • Height: measured vertically from the stair nosing line or ramp surface, generally between 865 mm and 1,070 mm.
    • Graspability: a circular profile roughly 30 to 43 mm in diameter, or a non-circular profile within defined perimeter and cross-section limits. A wide flat top rail is not a handrail.
    • Clearance: a gap of roughly 50 mm between the rail and any adjacent wall so a hand can wrap around it.
    • Continuity: the rail must run the full length of the flight without interruption, and extend past the top and bottom risers — commonly about 300 mm — so a user's hand stays supported past the last step.
    • Quantity: stairs need at least one handrail; wider stairs, generally those over about 1,100 mm, need one on each side.

    Handrails are designed for a concentrated load applied in any direction at any point — typically in the 0.9 to 1.0 kN range — rather than for a distributed load along a run. That single-point requirement drives bracket spacing and bracket anchorage far more than it drives rail section.

    A guard keeps a body from going over the edge. A handrail keeps a hand from letting go. Asking one part to do both is entirely possible, but it has to be a deliberate engineering decision — not an accident of the drawing.

    When one component has to do both jobs

    On an open-sided stair, you need a guard because there is a drop, and you need a handrail because there are steps. The obvious move is to make the guard's top rail graspable. That works, but the geometry is tight: the guard has to reach its minimum height above the nosing line, and the handrail has to stay within its allowable band. Where the two windows overlap, a single graspable rail is legal. Where they do not — particularly on exterior stairs where a taller guard is required — the standard solution is a secondary offset handrail mounted to the guard at the correct height, with the guard top rail serving purely as a barrier.

    That offset handrail is one of the most reliably forgotten items in a railing bid. It carries its own brackets, its own finish, its own returns and its own installation labour. When it appears at shop drawing stage rather than at tender, it becomes a change order — and it is on our list of the most common mistakes we see in commercial railing orders for exactly that reason.

    The same distinction, different rulebook, in the US

    For projects in the northeastern United States, the split is identical in concept but the numbers and terminology change. The International Building Code uses 42 inches as the standard guard height for most commercial applications and 34 to 38 inches for handrails, and the Americans with Disabilities Act layers accessibility requirements on top of the handrail rules — extensions, clearances, edge protection and graspable profile all tighten. If your project crosses the border, the handrail is the part of the assembly that changes most, and it is worth designing the handrail to the stricter of the two standards so one profile serves both.

    Why the distinction shows up in your budget

    Three practical consequences follow from getting this wrong. First, the authority having jurisdiction reviews guards and handrails against different clauses, so a submission that treats them as one item invites a comment cycle and a delay. Second, bidders price what the drawing calls out; a schedule that says only guard along a stair run will come back cheap and incomplete. Third, the two components anchor differently — guards into slab edges and structural substrate, handrails into walls, stringers or the guard itself — so pretending they are one item hides real anchorage engineering until it is too late to solve cheaply.
