Colour is usually the fastest decision on a railing package and one of the slowest to undo. A RAL number gets typed into a finish schedule in about four seconds, and it then governs how a building reads from the street for the next three decades. The decision is not really about colour. It is about pigment chemistry, sheen, exposure, coating chemistry and coordination with every other piece of metal on the envelope, all compressed into a four-digit code.
What the RAL system actually standardizes
RAL is a German colour standard whose original colour collection dates from 1927, created so that a buyer and a coating manufacturer could describe the same colour without shipping samples back and forth. It is a naming convention, not a performance standard. Three sub-systems come up on railing projects.
- RAL Classic — the familiar four-digit codes such as RAL 9005 and RAL 7016. Just over 200 colours. The first digit identifies the hue family: 1 yellow, 2 orange, 3 red, 4 violet, 5 blue, 6 green, 7 grey, 8 brown, 9 white and black. Nearly every architectural powder manufacturer stocks against this range.
- RAL Design System+ — a seven-digit system built on hue, lightness and chroma coordinates, with more than 1,800 colours. Much better for matching an architect's palette; much worse for availability, because almost everything in it is a custom batch.
- RAL Effect — metallic and mica colours. Useful as a reference point, but metallic powders lay down differently depending on profile geometry and gun setup, so they always need their own approval sample on the actual extrusion.
What RAL does not standardize is sheen. RAL 7016 at 30 gloss units and RAL 7016 at 80 gloss units are the same colour and two entirely different-looking railings. Gloss level has to be called out separately in the finish schedule, and it should be coordinated with the glazing and curtain wall packages so the whole envelope reads as one system rather than three.
The colours that actually get specified
Across commercial balcony and stair work in Canada, the working palette is narrow, and it is narrow for a reason. Greys, blacks and whites are built on inorganic pigments — carbon black, titanium dioxide, iron oxides — which are chemically stable under ultraviolet light. They hold colour because the pigment itself does not break down.
- RAL 9005 Jet Black — the default for contemporary picket and framed glass systems.
- RAL 7016 Anthracite Grey — the most common alternative to black; reads softer and hides road-salt film better.
- RAL 7021 Black Grey and RAL 7039 Quartz Grey — where the design wants a dark rail that is not quite black.
- RAL 9006 White Aluminum and RAL 9007 Grey Aluminum — metallic-look greys that coordinate with mill-finish and clear anodized adjacencies.
- RAL 9016 Traffic White — common on interior stairs and on light-coloured masonry buildings.
- RAL 8019 Grey Brown and RAL 6005 Moss Green — the usual choices when a heritage or landscaped context rules out black.
The failure cases are equally predictable. Saturated reds, oranges, magentas, bright yellows and some greens and blues depend on organic pigments, which degrade under UV regardless of how good the resin system is. On a south or west elevation you should expect visible shift in five to eight years, sometimes sooner. If a saturated accent colour is central to the design, restrict it to a sheltered or north elevation, specify the best weathering grade the colour is available in, and treat it as a planned repaint item rather than a permanent finish.
RAL specifies a colour. It says nothing whatsoever about how long that colour will still be that colour.
Dark colours, heat and movement
Black aluminum in direct summer sun reaches surface temperatures in the range of 70 to 80 degrees Celsius while the air temperature is 30. That has consequences beyond comfort. Aluminum expands by approximately 23 to 24 micrometres per metre per degree Celsius, depending on the alloy. A six-metre continuous top rail moving between roughly minus 30 in January and plus 80 on a July afternoon travels on the order of 15 millimetres over that annual cycle. If the design does not provide expansion joints, slotted connections and adequate end clearance, that movement goes somewhere — usually into buckled rails, sheared fasteners or cracked sealant at the base plates.
Dark colours also show everything. Road-salt film, pollen, construction dust and hard-water spotting from irrigation are all far more visible on RAL 9005 than on a mid-grey. On a downtown site with heavy winter de-icing, a mid-tone grey stays presentable between washes in a way black does not. That is a maintenance-budget decision as much as an aesthetic one.
Matching across trades is where colour goes wrong
The most common colour complaint on a finished building is not fading. It is a railing that does not quite match the window frames. Two products can carry the same RAL number, match perfectly under shop lighting, and diverge visibly in daylight. That is metamerism, and it happens because the two coatings reach the same colour through different pigment packages and different resin chemistries. It is almost guaranteed when curtain wall is finished in a fluoropolymer and railings are finished in a polyester, even at an identical RAL.
- Approve coated samples of the actual profiles, side by side, outdoors, in daylight — never chips from a fan deck.
- Match sheen as carefully as hue. A 20-gloss-unit difference reads as a colour difference to most people.
- Where budget allows, specify all exposed envelope metal in the same coating family so weathering rates stay aligned.
- Extrusions, sheet and cast components accept coating differently. If the system includes cast base covers or machined fittings, get a sample of each, not just the rail.
Samples, batches and what colour does to your schedule
Powder is manufactured in lots, and two lots of the same RAL from the same supplier can differ slightly. On a large repeat-floor tower, the practical control is to order the full project quantity of powder in a single lot and, at minimum, coat any one elevation from one lot. That single procurement decision eliminates most of the banding complaints that show up when a building is viewed from across the street.
Availability drives schedule. A standard RAL Classic colour in a standard architectural resin is typically stocked and adds nothing to lead time. A RAL Design System+ colour, a custom match to an existing building, or an unusual sheen in a high-durability resin generally means a custom batch with a minimum order in the range of 25 to 100 kilograms and two to four weeks before coating can even begin. On a project where railings already sit on the critical path — which is most of them — a late colour change is one of the few finish decisions that can genuinely move an occupancy date. Lock the colour at sample approval, not at shop drawing review.
Because we fabricate and coordinate finishing in-house rather than passing the package down a chain of suppliers, a colour issue caught at sample stage costs days instead of weeks. That is not a marketing point so much as a scheduling one: the fewer parties between the approved sample and the coated part, the fewer opportunities there are for a lot substitution nobody told you about.
