You match an older railing by reproducing what the eye actually reads at viewing distance, not by chasing the original part. Exact matching is usually impossible: the extrusion die from 1978 no longer exists, the alloy and finish chemistry have changed, the original colour has weathered into something that is no longer the colour it was specified as, and the current code will not permit the same geometry anyway. What is entirely achievable is a new railing that reads as belonging to the building. That comes down to four things in order of visual importance: silhouette and proportion, post rhythm, colour and gloss, and only then the fine profile detail that almost nobody perceives from more than a few metres away.
Step one: document what is actually there
Photographs from the ground are not enough. Someone has to get to the railing with tools. The useful record is a physical one: a removed sample section if at all possible, calliper measurements of the profile including wall thickness, the picket or baluster spacing measured over several bays rather than one, the post spacing and where the posts fall relative to the balcony edge and the building grid, the top rail height, and a close record of how the components join. Corner details and terminations tell you more about the original design language than the straight runs do.
The anchorage matters just as much for the match, even though nobody sees it. If the original posts are set into cores in the slab and the new system uses surface base plates, the post positions may shift and the rhythm changes. If the original guard was face-mounted to the slab edge and the new one is top-mounted, the guard moves inboard, the balcony loses a bit of floor area, and the shadow line on the facade changes. These are matching decisions even though they are structural ones.
Step two: decide what actually reads from the street
From twenty metres, a viewer perceives the overall lightness or heaviness of the guard, the spacing rhythm of vertical elements, the presence and thickness of a top rail, the colour, and how shiny it is. They do not perceive a three-millimetre corner radius on a picket, the difference between a 32 mm and a 35 mm post, or whether the top rail is a flat bar or a rounded cap. Spending the budget on a custom die to reproduce a detail nobody can see, while accepting a gloss level that is visibly wrong, is a common and expensive inversion of priorities. Gloss is the sleeper variable: a satin original beside a semi-gloss replacement reads as mismatched even when the colour is a perfect match, because the two surfaces behave differently in sunlight.
Get the silhouette, the rhythm and the gloss right and almost nobody notices the profile. Get the gloss wrong and everybody notices, even if they cannot say why.
Step three: match colour to the right target
Colour matching on an old railing starts with a decision: are you matching the original colour or the weathered one? A thirty-year-old powder coat has faded, chalked and shifted, sometimes dramatically on south and west elevations and much less on north. If you match the weathered appearance, the new work blends today and diverges over the next decade as the old material continues to change. If you match the original, the new work looks obviously new until the whole building is replaced. On a phased program spanning several years, matching the original is usually the better long-term choice, provided each phase is a complete elevation.
Technically, the reading should be taken with a spectrophotometer on a cleaned surface that has been protected from UV, such as the underside of a rail or the back of a post, rather than on a sun-bleached face. From there, a custom colour can be formulated, or the closest standard RAL selected if the difference is imperceptible in situ. Always require a sprayed sample on the actual substrate, and always view it outdoors on the building, at the right orientation, at the time of day the facade is most seen. Colour approved under shop fluorescents is a well-known way to get an unpleasant surprise.
Step four: choose how far to go on the profile
- Closest standard extrusion. Fastest and cheapest. Works well when the original profile was itself a common shape, which is more often the case than owners expect.
- Modified standard. A stock profile with altered caps, brackets or top rail so the proportions read correctly. This is the sweet spot for most retrofit work and where in-house fabrication earns its keep, because the modifications happen on our own floor rather than through a chain of suppliers.
- New custom die. A purpose-cut extrusion die for a bespoke profile. Typical die costs in 2026 run roughly in the CAD 2,000 to 8,000 range depending on complexity, plus a minimum production run, so it only makes sense above a certain quantity or where heritage requirements demand it. On a large tower or a multi-building portfolio, spread over thousands of linear feet, the per-foot impact is small.
Step five: reconcile the match with current code
This is where matching becomes a design problem rather than a procurement one. An older guard may be 900 mm tall with 150 mm picket spacing and a convenient horizontal rail at knee height. The replacement will typically need to be 1,070 mm on a balcony, will need openings that reject a 100 mm sphere, and cannot offer a foothold in the zone between roughly 140 mm and 900 mm above the floor. You cannot match that railing and comply. What you can do is reproduce its character within the new rules: keep the same post rhythm and add pickets between, so the vertical grid reads as a denser version of the original; carry the original top rail profile and cap detail at the new height; and keep the same colour and gloss so the change reads as intentional.
Phasing decisions do more for visual coherence than any single detail. Replace by full elevation or by vertical stack, never scattered balconies across a facade. A building with one wholly new elevation and three original ones looks like a renovation in progress, which it is. A building with new railings on random balconies looks neglected. This is the same principle that governs any staged replacement on an occupied building, and it is worth defending against pressure to do the worst balconies first regardless of where they are.
When the building is heritage designated
Designated buildings add a review layer, and the requirements vary considerably by municipality and by the terms of the specific designation. Some reviews require reproduction of the original profile and finish; others explicitly prefer a clearly contemporary insert so that new work is legible as new. Either way, expect the review to add time to the schedule and to require submissions with far more detail than a standard permit. Get the heritage conversation started before the design is fixed, not after, and budget for the possibility that a custom die will be mandatory rather than optional.
